Either you get results or you give excuses. You can’t have great results in your life when you are always giving excuses. Results (health, education, financial) in your life are a direct gauge of how much excuses you are giving in your life. The less excuses you give, the more positive results you will have in life.
Common excuses include
It is easy to come out with excuses. However, doing so means that you are taking away positive results in your life.
You choose the direction that you move in life. If you choose to make excuses, then don’t complain when you do not get the results that you want. Make the decision to take 100% responsibility for your own life and you can see radical changes to your life quality.
1st Step: Write down the excuses that you commonly use
Awareness is the first step for growth. Writing down your excuses will help you to build your awareness. When you are aware of the excuses you are using, you can then proceed to deal with it.
Get a piece of paper and write down the common excuses you frequently use. You can also keep a small notepad by your side or use any note taking app (I use Evernote for iPhone). You can also keep a journal or write Morning Pages. Doing so for a period of time (2 to 3 weeks) will help you to see patterns in your life (example: your common obstacles, excuses etc).
Once your excuses are identified, you can proceed on to replace them with positive thoughts.
2nd Step: Reframing your excuses
Reframing your excuses means that you replace your excuses with positive ideas that will empower you. You can find some of these exercises in my ebook Unleash Your Maximum Potential.
For example: your frequently used excuse is “I’m too young to be an entrepreneur.”
By reframing it, you think of youth as strength instead of a weakness. Being young means that you have more energy and new ideas for setting up businesses that fulfills the market gaps that no one else has explored. You can write down these positive ideas on a piece of paper and stick it at somewhere that you can see every day. I use Post It notes and I stick it at my cupboard right beside my work desk. I make sure I can see them everyday.
Reframing is a great way to help you replace negative thoughts in your mind with empowering thoughts. This method works well with excuses that weaken your self belief.
3rd Step: Know your excuses but focus on the solution
It doesn’t help if you know that your common excuse is you think you do not have time to work on your goals yet you kept repeating this to yourself. Once you are aware of the excuses you are using, focus on the solution. Focus on how. Think about how you are going to overcome it. Excuses are like little steps on the stairs that we need to conquer one step at a time.
If you say that you don’t have time. Find out why is it that you don’t have time. Is it you spend too many hours watching TV or stalking others on Facebook? Or are you surfing aimlessly online searching for the next magic bullet? If you know where you spend your time, you will know which areas you can spend less time on so that you have time for more important things.
Regardless of what excuses that you use frequently, once you identified them, focus on the solution. Focus on the “how”. How can you get rid of this obstacle so that you can get to the next level?
Live an excuse free life and get the results that you desire. It may not be easy, but it is something that is worth working towards. I hope you enjoy this video and article. Have a great weekend!
