I have completed my first 10 miles run last Sunday. It is an awesome experience and I had picked up lots of valuable lessons in preparing for my marathon. This is my first time participating in a public run and there are lots of fun and valuable lessons that I had picked up.
1. Be Early
Even though I had reached the venue 10 minutes earlier, I was surprised when they started 10 minutes before the starting time. I did not manage to warm up properly and I was rushing to change into my sport gear. This set me up into a rather bad start. If you are going to participate in any public run, try to reach earlier and make sure that you have enough time to complete your warm up.
2. Start Slow
I was rather excited when I took off from the starting line. As a result, I ran too fast in the beginning and this cause me to have a sluggish finish. As mentioned by Leo Babauta over his marathon experience, start slow and make sure you are in your comfortable pace. Falling into the pace of others will disrupt your overall run performance.
3. Run In The Morning
My training consists of night runs and I rarely do any morning runs. It is a huge difference between running in the day and in the night. When it was about 8 am, the sun was glaring and the heat seems to suck out my energy. Luckily, for my next run on 29th May, it will be conducted at midnight and I will not need to deal with this problem. However, I will definitely take this into consideration for my full marathon during December.
4. Expect The Unexpected
I was surprised when I saw overhead bridges as part of the course. I had climbed four overhead bridges during the run. It was a killer. Climbing those drains off my energy much faster and it is worse when the overhead bridge is crowded with people.
I came in at 1:36:57 and it is an acceptable result which can be improve upon. Overall, it is a great run and I had great fun. If you have never taken part in a public run before, I highly recommend you to go register for your first run. It does not need to be 10 miles, there are other mini runs that you can take part in. Go participate in one and I bet you will enjoy it as much as I do.
